The grassy, spicy scent of thyme is so pleasant that the plant derives its name from the Greek root thyo, meaning “to smell good, to give off a pleasant aroma.”
Found in sunny scrublands and stony terrain, thymol-containing thyme is cultivated in France. Morocco and Spain distill related species of this shrub.
