Place the brush at the root of the lashes on the upper eyelid, placing the widest part at the base of the brush on the outer lashes.
Closing the eyes at each application, smooth (without zig-zagging) from root to tip of the lashes to coat and separate them.
Swivel the brush to work the other eye and place the longest fibers at the outer corner again. 

Lashes on the lower eyelid can also be smoothed with the front (finer) half of the brush.
