Louise and Alexandre were the children of architect Alexandre Théodore Brongniart (1739-1813), famous for the construction of the Paris Bourse and the transformation of the Père Lachaise cemetery.

Born of a painter mother and a concierge father at the Louvre, Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) soon rubbed shoulders with the best sculptors of the day, including Jean Baptiste Pigalle and Jean Baptiste Lemoyne. Houdon, who became known as the sculptor of the Enlightenment, set in stone portraits of personalities of his time, such as Czarina Diderot, Voltaire and Rousseau.

The most brilliant portrait painter of 18th-century France, Houdon maintained a lifelong interest in the theme of childhood. His portraits of the Brongniart children in 1777 express with strength and tenderness the trend for a subject that was never to go out of fashion.
