This little-known model of Marie-Antoinette d'Autriche is attributed to Brachard, without specifying whether it is the eldest, Jean-Charles-Nicolas, or the youngest, Jean-Nicolas-Alexandre. The bust represents an idealized portrait of the Queen of France, in contrast to other pieces more oriented towards evoking a sovereign at the height of her power. Her head turned slightly to the right, her shoulders clothed in a natural knotted fabric, she wears a diadem adorned with a fleur-de-lis and held in place by a string of pearls. A famous and controversial woman in French history, Marie-Antoinette was the subject of numerous artistic representations. Many of these valuable pieces disappeared during the French Revolution.
